The Last Fence Post
| 07 December 2009
It was a big day for Rhino Ark when late 2009 the last fence post of the 400 km long fence was put into the ground ceremoniously by Forestry and Wildlife Minister, Noah Wekesa, with Colin Church of Rhino Ark and Julius Kipnetich of KWS looking on. This huge achievement has taken just over 20 years and the majority of the support has been raised by teams like ourselves in the annual Rhino Charge event.

I found this photograph in the online version of Nation Newspaper which shows the last fence post being planted.
Now the hard work begins- how to maintain this important fence and to ensure that the efforts of the past two decades does not go to waste. Rhino Ark started a maintainanc fund in June 2003 into which 20% of Net Revenue from each Rhino Charge event was placed. The building of this fund to ensure that the Aberdare fence is maintained will be the primary focus of this years Rhino Charge event.
Here is a helful illustration showing the progress of construction of the Aberdare fence as of 2006. I am hoping to get a more up to date version of this to post here also courtesy of Rhino Ark.
